An eventful card took place a few hours ago at ONE Fight Night 14 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang. Reigning Atomweight Champion Angela Lee was in attendance despite not being scheduled to fight on the card.
Eight of the ten fights in last night’s event resulted in a stoppage in a jam-packed evening in Singapore. Stamp Farifex and Ham Seo-hee headlined the card which was for the interim women’s atomweight title, or so we thought.
The winner of last night’s main event would have been scheduled to face Angela Lee for the undisputed title, but that will no longer be the case. Lee made an emotional entrance to the cage, laying her title down on the floor, announcing her retirement from the sport.
As a result, the interim title fight became undisputed. Stamp Fairtex is the new atomweight champion after winning in the third round with punches to the body, resulting in a TKO. All of Stamp Fairtex’s MMA fights have come in ONE Championship, and her victory over Ham Seo-hee last night took her MMA record to 11-2.
Lee’s retirement comes soon after she revealed the struggles she and her family have been through recently with the death of her sister, Victoria Lee. In an open and honest interview with Daniel Cormier for ESPN, Lee revealed she has struggled significantly with her mental health in the past in a brave and inspiring discussion.
Lee began her MMA career at the age of just 18, defeating Aya Saber via armbar in the very first round. Over the next three years, she won and defended the ONE Atomweight Championship on three occasions, amassing a 9-0 MMA record at 21 years old.
Moving up to strawweight, Lee had less success and returned to atomweight, defending her title two more times. It’s unclear what Angela Lee’s future plans are, but one thing for certain is that she’s left a lasting print on women’s MMA, particularly in ONE Championship.
