UFC 296 is less than a week away and will be headlined by the UFC welterweight champion, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards, as he defends his title against Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington. Asked about this thoughts on Edwards both as a person and as a fighter, Covington didn’t mince his words as he adopted the trash-talk persona he has become synonymous with over the past few years.
Covington’s thoughts on Leon Edwards
”Well, first off, as a person, Leon Scott (Edwards), AKA low IQ Leon, what’s his grade level like? What’s his level of education? Because I swear, that guy’s a mumbling, fumbling idiot; he’s literally always drooling on himself. As a person, I just think that guy is a waste of f****** chromosomes and a waste of space.” – Covington told Mirror Fighting.
Covington’s tirade didn’t stop there as he made an accusation that Edwards was ‘the biggest cheater the sport has ever known’ as he referred to Leon Edwards’ fight with Belal Muhammad, which ended as a no-contest due to an accidental eye-poke by Edwards in the second round of their fight in March 2021.
Many fans are looking forward to the pre-fight press conference for UFC 296 this coming week due to the volume of characters on the card. Ian Garry and Paddy Pimblett are two of those, and both have said things about Covington in the past that haven’t gone unnoticed. Edwards is the only fighter on Covington’s mind right now and isn’t looking past next Saturday night. That being said, it would surprise almost nobody should Covington engage in a slanging match with other talent during the press conference.
Covington on McGregor running for President
Aside from the main event at UFC 296, another huge story in the world of MMA which is ongoing, is Conor McGregor’s activity on X, formerly known as Twitter. Over the past few weeks, ‘The Notorious’ has been calling out the Irish government with numerous tweets relating to the perceived lack of safety Irish citizens have on their streets. McGregor has stated on X that he’s interested in potentially running for President, and Covington feels the former two-weight UFC champion would do well in the role:
”I think Conor would be a great leader. He has a lot of those world-championship qualities. He believes in freedom, which is the most important [thing], so I respect Conor so much because of how much he cares about his people and how much he wants freedom for his people. He doesn’t want to see his people being killed in the streets and the streets of Ireland being burned. He [McGregor] would be a great leader over there. The guy’s already been a world-class fighter, one of the best fighters we’ve ever seen in this sport. [He is] the biggest fighter for sure the sport has ever seen, so I think he would do great things in politics in Ireland.
