After joining the UFC over a decade ago, Conor McGregor didn’t waste much time in announcing himself to the world. Five stoppage victories in his first six UFC fights led to him getting a featherweight title shot and dethroning the long-reigning champion, José Aldo, in just a few seconds.
He became a bonafide star soon after, and his confidence and presence on the microphone contributed massively to him becoming a global superstar and one of the most recognizable faces on the planet. McGregor has never been shy about voicing his opinions, and his post on ‘X’ today isn’t the first time his words have got people talking.
‘The Notorious’ has a history of criticizing the powers at be in his homeland and has made his opinions quite clear about the government’s stance on many issues. In the first half of 2020, he made a video pleading with the Irish Government to take drastic action on the borders and to stop the virus from spreading.
As time went on, McGregor changed his stance and became more and more critical of the lockdowns, arguing that they were unsustainable in the long term, raising concerns about their impact on small business owners in his country. In the past twelve months, a larger proportion of McGregor’s tweets have been political in nature. In November 2023, he called for stricter controls on immigration into Ireland and linked public safety concerns to the presence and increase of non-Irish nationals.
Posts of this nature continued into 2024, and now, remarkably, he has hinted that he’ll make a run for Presidency in the Republic Of Ireland next year.
McGregor said on ‘X’ today:
As President I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it. So as i said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on! These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland and I would have it done by day end. Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely. Stop the train until. The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek. Point blank. This would be my power as President. I know very well. Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming…
What do you make of the above? Could Conor McGregor seriously run for President?
