Drama in the MMA world today, as Dustin Poirier tweeted earlier today that his fight with Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 was off.
Poirier posted a picture on ‘X’ formerly known as Twitter, on Thursday afternoon of him in the gym at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, Florida, with the caption ”My fight is off but still working.”
MMA journalist Ariel Helwani posted on X that he reached out to Dustin Poirier soon after, who informed him that a contract had not been signed prior to the UFC’s announcement and that he had subsequently failed to agree on terms for the fight.
Then, the UFC President took to social media from his private jet, criticizing a journalist (Guilherme Cruz) who had reported the news that the UFC 299 co-main had been scrapped. White shared what seemed to be screenshots from a conversation with Benoit Saint-Denis, which indicated that he had agreed for the fight to go ahead. It’s worth noting that this doesn’t prove that Poirier himself had agreed.
However, Poirier took to X shortly afterward to clear up the situation, stating that there had been a misunderstanding due to his inability to contact his manager over the past few days. Poirier confirmed the fight was on and will take place on March 9th in Miami, Florida, as originally scheduled.
Following this, Ariel Helwani received some criticism from fans for his reporting of the situation, which he defended with the following tweet:
What a rollercoaster of a few hours. Politics and drama aside, Dustin Poirier against Benoit Saint-Denis will go to battle in the co-main event at UFC 299.
