Much like his compatriot, Conor McGregor, Ian Garry isn’t one to shy away from the headlines. Since making his UFC debut in November 2021, Garry has rarely been out of the news thanks to his entertaining fighting style, unbeaten streak, and ability to talk trash on the microphone.
In recent times, Garry has been at the forefront of various news articles and Twitter comments thanks to others’ opinions regarding his family life, a topic usually not discussed in the fight game.
Such comments about his personal life will have no doubt caused some hurt and pain, but Garry is using this as fuel and seems to be now desensitized somewhat to the barrage of hate he’s experienced online.
Garry joined the TNT Sports UFC 298 preview show to tell Adam Catterall, Nick Peet, and Michael Bisping that his stock is higher now than it’s ever been, despite not having fought since last August.
Garry’s thoughts about online trolls
”The truth is, the MMA community should be thankful because everybodies videos that were posted, that had my name in it, got much more traction and more views. You had people talking about me, talking out of their a**, not fact-checking, not doing anything. The truth is, I’m still going to turn up and do my job. I’m going to get my hand raised. I’m going to 14-0, and if anybody has a problem or anyone has anything to say, I couldn’t care less” – Garry told TNT Sports.
Garry was supposed to fight Vicente Luque at UFC 296. He had to withdraw due to contracting pneumonia but said he has taken adequate time to recover and is raring to go this weekend. Geoff Neal presents the toughest test of Ian Garry’s MMA career to date. The veteran has good boxing ability, but so does the Irishman, and Garry believes that he’s going to control the range at will, much like he did in his last outing against Neil Magny.
Garry on his plans for 2024
Ian Garry is expecting a busy 2024 as he looks to surge up the welterweight rankings. He ruled out a quick turnaround after his fight with Geoff Neal by effectively ruling out an appearance at UFC 300. This is unless Conor Mcgregor fights on the card, something which seems unlikely at his point, with the UFC targeting International Fight Week in June for the return of ‘The Notorious.’ Garry wants to be the co-main event on the June 29 card, and although he stopped short of giving a name, reading between the lines, Garry indicated that he was targeting a fight with Colby Covington.
