Currently on a tour of Australia, the two-division UFC Champion, Jon Jones, took some time out of his schedule to chat with Submission Radio for their YouTube channel.
Jones Vs. Miocic at UFC 300?
The UFC is scrambling for a main event at UFC 300, with Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway expected to be the night’s co-main event for the BMF title. Weili Zhang also defends her belt against Yan Xiaonan in the women’s strawweight division at UFC 300.
‘Bones’ revealed that the UFC brass contacted him a couple of days ago to offer him the opportunity to headline the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, a revelation that the organization’s marquee event is yet to be finalized:
”I got a call from Hunter Campbell, one of the head lawyers for the UFC, asking me (to be the headliner). He said, ”Jon, I know it’s only nine weeks away, but if there is any chance you are feeling up to it, it would be awesome news for the community that you’re coming back and headlining one of the biggest [UFC] events ever.”
A Jon Jones versus Stipe Miocic announcement would have been huge news for the MMA world and capped off what is expected to be a blockbuster event on Saturday, April 13. Unfortunately, fans will have to continue to wait for the news of the champion’s return date.
”As honored as I am for the opportunity, I just don’t think I’ll be ready; I just don’t. I’m getting up there in age, and I only have a few events left, so I want to give those events my all and make sure that I come back one hundred percent.”
Many believe Jon Jones’ first title defense at heavyweight will be his farewell fight in mixed martial arts. However, listening to his interview with Submission Radio, he still aspires to compete for at least the next couple of years. Jones acknowledges that his future would depend on how he recovers from his pectoral surgery and on his ability to compete at the highest level due to his age.
Interestingly, Jones didn’t rule out a bout with the UFC’s interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, in the future. Such a fight would be one of the biggest in UFC history, with the Brit being viewed by some as the man to end Jon Jones’ dominance in the sport potentially. First and foremost, Jones has to overcome one of the greatest of all time in Stipe Miocic, which is no easy feat.
