Tracy Cortez, the number 11 ranked flyweight won all five of her UFC fights going into tonight’s main event and is riding an eleven fight win streak. Rose Namajunas doesn’t need much of an introduction. One of the greatest female fighters of all time, she is a two-time Strawweight champion and future hall of famer.
Round 1
A fast one-two combo lands on Cortez after some success with the calf kicks from Namajunas. Rose keeps landing the left jab before one of them floors Cortez. It’s not long before they’re back on their feet. Cortez struggles to close the distance but manages to land a nice right hand. It’s vintage Rose in the first round.
Round 2
Despite the clear advantage in the striking department, Cortez decides to stand and trade with Rose, and she’s having more success than in the first round. After being unfazed by a head kick, she takes down Namajunas, but it’s only for a brief moment. Then, at the end of the round, Namajunas gets a takedown of her own.
Round 3
Knowing that she’s probably two rounds down, Cortez comes out very aggressive and gets taken down by Namajunas. Most of the third round is Rose in dominant position on the ground as she goes 3-0 up on our scorecards. Cortez needs a finish.
Round 4
Another takedown from Namajunas before we are back to the feet. Although it’s been a dominant display so far, Cortez doesn’t look out of place at this level. Her will is not broken and she continues to stand in front of Namajunas with purpose. Most of the round is spent on the feet with Namajunas edging it.
Round 5
Great opening to the round as Cortez marches forward and goes on full throttle mode. Namajunas starts to retreat to stay out of range and control the distance, which she does a good job of.
The final bell rings and it’s been a stellar performance by Rose Namajunas as she wins via unanimous decision, 49-6 x2, 48-47.
In her post-fight interview, Rose requests a flyweight title shot or a chance to fight for a female BMF title. That would be interesting! If that were to happen, who would the opponent be?
