Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou: Reaction

Tyson Fury, the WBC and Lineal Heavyweight Champion, boxed former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Francis Ngannou, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Saturday night in what was a close fought contest. Ngannou began the fight in a patient and calm manner and shocked the world when he knocked Fury to the canvas with a left hook in round three. Fury got up and had success with his jab, however he didn’t cause any significant damage to Ngannou over the ten rounds.

The fight went to the judges scorecards, with Tyson Fury retaining his unbeaten record with a split decision victory (96-93, 95-94, 94-95.) The scorecards, particularly the 96-93 for Fury, were controversial and have caused a stir on social media. Read below for some of the immediate reaction to the fight:

The title of the Baddest Man on the Planet doesn’t belong to boxing.

It belongs to MMA.

Look at this moment right here.

Impossible to state just how massive this is for MMA and MMA fighters.

No more smugness from the boxing community.

What an event to open #RiyadhSeason. @francis_ngannou is a boxer no question!

Time for Undisputed next in Saudi Arabia! #BattleOfTheBaddest

— Frank Warren (@FrankWarren) October 28, 2023

Really sucks to see Ngannou get blatantly robbed like that… boxing needs a more objective system in place for scoring

The subjectivity & inherent bias of hand-picked judges is ruining the credibility of the sport 📉

— Logan Paul (@LoganPaul) October 28, 2023

Francis Ngannou. I was wrong.

Wow.
Is there anything you can’t actually do?

Fancy a game upfront for United tomorrow? #FuryNgannou #RiyadhSeason

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Francis Ngannou is one of the greatest stories in combat sports history. What this man has gone through and achieved is nothing short of inspirational. pic.twitter.com/qlMV8BQqWU

— Conner Burks (@connerburks) October 29, 2023

Hey remember when the thinking was that Francis Ngannou had fumbled the bag and sacrificed his legacy all for a boxing match he’d never get and would get easily demolished in even if he did somehow get it? Yeah that was less than a year ago.
